Genius Ideas for Mom: Supporting Our Day Jobs

Chapter 1: Basic Ingredients

We're going to start working our way through the book You Can Write a Story! by Lisa Bullard and Illustrated by Deborah Haley Melmon today. Anyone that would like to is welcome to join us.

Because of the copyright, I won't be typing out everything in each section but I will list the activity we are doing that fits the chapter.

Talk about how stories need ingredients just like recipes.

Have your student take out pencil & paper and answer these questions:

1. What is your favorite animal?

2. If you could travel anywhere, where would you visit?

3. What is an activity that you really enjoy?

The animal can become a character in a story. The place can be a setting. The activity can be used to build action into your story. (This is a good time to review the definitions of character and setting if your kids are rusty or don't know them yet.)

See how many ingredients you've come up with? You're on your way to writing a story!
